p90x: done.

...or shall I say p76x since I skipped all of the yoga days. :) And...well...it didn't quite get done in 76 days.

Today I completed p90x. If you've been following my blog for a while, you've seen little mentions of my progress along the way. And I'm excited to say today it is done!

Stephen decided a few years ago that he wanted to do p90x. I had also been wanting to do this workout program so I bought the set for him for Christmas. After it arrived, it sat on the shelf collecting dust.

I decided at the end of last year it was time I made those DVDs worth what I paid for them. However, I didn't want it to be one of those new year's resolutions that is kept for about a week and then forgotten.

So, I started it December 1st with the hopes of being close to done with it by the time Laura got married. Hmm...her wedding was March 17th and today is well past that date.

You see, I had started this workout several times and just never finished it. I made it through phase 1 or almost through phase 1 on numerous occasions, but always hit a rut and never picked it back up.

This program is a 3 month program with a work out for every day of those 3 months (one day a week is a rest/stretch routine). This time, I knew if I was going to truly make it all the way through the program, 90 days was not realistic for me.

Who really has an hour to an hour and a half every day for 90 days straight to work out?
Not me.

I decided going in I wasn't going to feel bad about having to skip a day here and there. I knew several major holidays would be happening in my "90" day period along with the winter and spring sports seasons at school. I knew there would be days where I got up at 5:45, left the house at 6:30, and didn't get home until after 7pm. Working out on those days just doesn't happen.

I also had several sick days through the winter season .

And then there were the days I had time to work out, but just really didn't feel like it.

And I may have also decided going in that I wasn't going to work out on the weekends.

Looking back, I didn't really set myself up for success. And, needless to say, I don't have the dramatic before and after pictures. You know the ones of me looking not so toned and then the after pics of me looking like a macho man woman. Yea...that didn't happen.

However, I did see improvements along the way. I got to the point where I didn't feel like I was going to die halfway into the work out. I got pretty good at some of the push-ups. I could even do the bonus round on some of the workouts. And I could definitely feel it the day after a good work out.

Tony mentions in the Core Synergistics routine that that routine might just become my favorite. All through phases 1 and 2, I hated Core days. As I entered phase 3, my hatred let up some and I began to really like it. I don't know that it became my favorite, but I knew I would be getting a serious workout on Core days and walk away feeling great.

I will say a lot of the reason it took me so long to finish (aside from the unavoidable missed days), is twofold.

One, I think this work out is better for guys to do because if you do it right, it will really bulk you up. I already feel "bulky" enough and didn't want to bulk up anymore.

And two, I got really bored with the workouts, which led to me skipping some of the routines slacking off and not giving my all every time I worked out. In phases 2 and 3, I missed 2 weeks in a row just because I could not bring myself to do another p90x work out or hear Tony talk.

I followed phases 1 and 2 just like the schedule told me to. I modified phase 3 for myself. Phase 3 was a lot of the chest and back workouts. Like I said before, I already feel too bulky so I switched those workouts out for either just an arm work out or a legs workout. I also added in more of the Core, Kenpo, and Cardio routines than it called for. And I may have counted my week of painting as my arm workouts for that week.

I'm glad it's done. I'm proud I completed it even if it did take twice as long as it should have.

I'm really glad to be moving onto something different. I've pinned a lot of random in-home workouts on pinterest. So, I'm going to start giving those a try.

I'll keep you posted...
