This competition was completely optional and involving students was optional as well. Some teachers are letting their students do all of the decorating. I'm too OCD for that...especially when there is a $50 reward waiting for the winner. However, I did let my students make the snowflakes for the door and they loved that. I'll let you know who wins and get some pictures of some of the other doors.
Last week we went to the STEAM academy that Burke County offers for AIG students. They did an all day lesson on coding and programming robots. We had these fun Spheros to play with and the kids loved it!
At the end, they had the students talk about what they learned and how these robots could possibly be used to better society. My favorite answer was from the student who said, "They could be good for people with depression because they're kind of like a companion."
After lunch everyday we have Flex Time where students get about 20 minutes of some kind of physical activity in. It's so good as we head into the afternoon to let them get some energy out. They other day we had this conversation.
A sweet boy with the thickest, slowest country drawl you can imagine came up to us.
Him: Um I have a zit in my ear.
Teacher: I'm sorry.
Him: John (another student) thinks I need to go home because it has a hair coming out of it.
Teacher: Well, I'm not sure you need to go home, but why don't you let the nurse take a look at it.
Him: Okay.
Thankfully my teammate talked through that one because I was about to die laughing! "I need to go home because I have a zit in my ear." That's a new one!
7.5 school days until Christmas break!
