Scale Drawings

We started our geometry unit last week and one of our standards focuses on scale. Students have to know how to draw images to scale, solve problems using scale, and explain how scale affects area and perimeter. We were directed to this idea by our math facilitator earlier in the year and I was super excited to get my students to complete theirs!

We spent a whole week working on these and finished them up today. I was really happy with how they turned out!

Scale Drawings How To:
First, tape or glue wrapper to centimeter grid paper
Use the grid paper to make a grid on the wrapper
Then, make the larger grid. Using the smaller wrapper, determine what size scale you have room to increase by,

Next, start drawing. Getting students to understand the point of the grid was harder than I expected. So many of them just wanted to free hand the image, making it much harder on themselves than it needed to be.

 Then, color!

Once everyone was done drawing and coloring, we dove into the discussion about how scale impacted their image. When I told them we had more math to look at with these on Monday, they responded, "Math?! I thought we were just drawing candy!"
We measured the original and new area and perimeter and compared them together as a class.
 Finished products!
