Power Outage

When I got to school today, I noticed a section of the lights were off in the cafeteria. As I walked in, I noticed the lunch ladies were hand writing student numbers down and that their computer screens were black. As I walked farther into the building, I noticed the halls were very dark. In my classroom, water was all over the counter where my fridge had defrosted, soaking the things I had laid out to be laminated today...great!

The lights in my classroom worked, my microwave was on, and my computers were on, but the AC and my fridge were not. Next door and down the hall, everything was completely black.

Apparently the power was out, but only partially.

No air, no way to cook food, no fire alarms...seems like a perfect reason to send everyone home!

With the fire alarms out and downstairs completely black, we couldn't send students to class. So we began the day with everyone hanging out in the cafeteria and gym.
As you can imagine, that got hot fast. Here in the mountains, the mornings are beginning to have a small taste of fall. It was much cooler outside than inside. So, we all headed out...each grade level to a different parking lot...
7th grade went right out behind the cafeteria, near the dumpsters. With that location, came yellow jackets. So, we made the decision to move. We herded all 250 7th graders through the pitch black building down to the lower parking lot. We had to sit against the edge of the building because 8th grade was in the parking lot.
And, there we sat for the next little while, hoping they would make the call to send us home. However, around 9:30, Duke Power came through and power was restored.

So, here we are learning away!

Never a dull moment!
