This week we were wrapping up our unit on the number system (positive & negative numbers, fractions, and decimals). The only way to get better at these is to practice, practice, practice!
Listening to me teach and doing a lot of practice problems gets so boring for everyone...even me.
So, I decided we needed to switch things up towards the end of the week.
I put students in groups and gave them a problem set to work on.
They each had to solve the problem and then agree on their answer as a group.
Once they agreed on an answer, they wrote their group name and answer on a post-it note and put it on the appropriate poster around the room.
This was really just a fancy way of getting them to practice word problems using decimals. And, it was a quick formative assessment for me.
As I walked around and looked at the answer on the poster, I could quickly see groups who had done it wrong. I would take the post-it back to them and have them re-work it.
I was so impressed with how engaged they were with this. Being able to talk to their peers, check their work, and get up and move a little made them not even realize they were doing math!
