Danger Misunderstood

Each week I give my students a Superstars worksheet, which is a sheet full of challenge problems. This is for students to work on throughout the week if they finish an assignment early or don't have homework one night. They are due each Friday.

This past week, students had to complete this task:
Assign values to each letter so that the message becomes a meaningful addition example. Write your answer as an addition example beside the one below.

   CROSS
+ROADS
DANGER

The point was to give each letter a number so that the problem works. So, if S is 3, R has to be 6 when you add the two S's together...and so on...

This was a hard one and was worth 4 stars, the max. Several of my students created their own "addition" problem...while they didn't understand the math problem, they certainly understand danger. Here are 3 of my favorites...

   VOLCANO
+ JUMPING
    DEATH

    MATCH
+ GRASS
FIRE

TEXTING
+ DRIVING
ACCIDENT
