2017 A Year in Review

It's always hard to believe another year has come and gone. Initially I wasn't going to set goals for 2017, but I'm glad I did. I feel like I got a little better at setting specific goals, helping me see more progress throughout the year.

Here's a look at the goals I set and how I did...
Get back into running
I ran some earlier in the year and then got pregnant. Not to say you can't run when you're pregnant, but since I wasn't in any kind of running shape to begin with, running with a growing baby made things super difficult so I stuck to walking.

Calligraphy
I set this goal last year and didn't follow through so I added it in for 2017 with a question mark. I did practice some with some free printables from Pinterest, but got bored fast. There was a calligraphy class offered in Hickory, but when I went to sign up for it, it was full. I wouldn't mind doing that class this coming year, but don't know that I have any desire to officially become a calligrapher.

Finish Prayer by Tim Keller
Whew! I wasn't sure I'd ever finish that book, but I did!

Read Tim Keller's marriage book w/ Stephen
It doesn't work so well when you set goals for someone else. :)

Fun trip with Stephen
We got to the beach this year!

Train Truett ✅?
I guess I can put a check mark here. He definitely knows the main commands and knows what he should and shouldn't do. If new people are around, he's so excited he doesn't always listen well, but we're still working on that.

Polaroid camera
I got this after we found out we were pregnant and used it to document my growing belly and Truett.

Baby?
Due February! Still can't believe I get to put a check mark beside this one.

Daily quiet time with Stephen✅?
This was hit or miss this year. We had seasons where we did great and then super slack seasons.

Memorize scripture with Stephen
I memorized 11 of the 12 verses I had planned to memorize this year. Stephen lasted through about June with me.
Clean out closet
I cleaned it out and then added to it with maternity clothes.

Make friends-dinner dates, game nights. Initiate, don't wait to be invited
I still tend to wait to be invited. Stephen is much better at initiating. Overall, we did well with this this year.

Monitor fast food and sweet tea for 3 months then limit it
I got fast food and sweet tea down to 1 (sometimes 2) times a week for the majority of the year.

Social media free weekend✅?
I did a few of these...not as many as I would have liked.

Visit the Ansel Adams exhibit

Read for fun✅
I feel like I didn't read much, but here is what I read with my review.

-Missing, Presumed by Susie Steiner
This was recommend on a list on Pinterest. It was supposed to have an awesome twist. It's about a missing girl and was super slow. When I got to page 200 and there were no leads on this girl, I skipped to the last 50 pages and read all I needed to know. The last 50 pages were great... the first 200...not so much. I kept reading waiting for "the great plot twist" that I must have missed in the pages I skipped. I can't speak to the other 100 pages.

-You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott
This was from the same Pinterest list. It's a murder "mystery" and I use the term mystery lightly. I wouldn't say it had a major plot twist, but it was a really good read!
-Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson
I LOVED it. It's about 2 young girls finding their identity and learning the importance of true friendship in the process. It reminded me of me and Steph: list making and staying close no matter where life takes you.
-Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum
This was a cute story. It's a young adolescent book that I got off a list of "Books I Read in One Sitting." I read it in a day so I'd agree.

-Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
This was a good YA book. It was also on the "Books I Read in One Sitting" list. It was easy to walk away from, but interesting enough to come back to and finish. I would have liked a little more detail at the end, but overall it was a good, unlikely love story.

-Saving Wishes by GJ Walker-Smith
It was a good love story. I didn't realize it's part of a series until the last page since I got it from Book Bub for free. I looked for Book 2 to see what happened, but didn't end up reading it.

-Blue Wide Sky by Inglath Cooper
A cute romance. Another freebie from Book Bub. I was scared it was a series when it abruptly ended, but the epilogue wrapped everything up really well. I wouldn't have minded more details in the falling action, but I enjoyed it.

-When I Lost You by Kelly Rimmer
This one was really good! I was supposed to read it at the beach, but I got sucked in and finished it a week early.

-The Weekenders by Mary Kay Andrews
This was a perfect beach read. It had a great mix of scandal, murder mystery, and love story.

-The Secret Daughter by Kelly Rimmer
Another great book. It's about forced adoption and reconciliation. I read it in 2 days at the beach.

-Significance by Shelly Crane
Another freebie (I think) that turned out to be book 1 in a series. Ugh! It's a YA love story with a little sci-fi (super powers), but not too much for me. I liked it. I probably won't try and find the sequels though.

-Prayer by Tim Keller
Whew. Finally! The first part was very theology heavy...a bit over my head, but I've never been a theology nerd. The second part was much more practical and easier to read and apply.

-All of Me by Leeanna Morgan
This was a good book. Several plots going on that tied together well. Easy to pick up and read, but also easy to put down for several days/weeks. It is part of a series, but not with a cliffhanger. Thankfully!
