Spring break! It's here!!
Thankfully the last 3.5 days went fairly quickly.
The two weeks before that I wasn't so sure we'd make it...but I was probably just being dramatic. We actually had a lot of fun the two weeks before break.
We spent a week in the library doing a research project. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out since this was the first time the librarian and I had ever attempted something like this. Overall I was really impressed with what our students came up with. They had several options of topics and products and they seemed to have a really good time with it.
This one below was probably the best. These two researched how contractors use math every day. They created a PowerPoint presentation discussing how math is used and then they made a blue print and model of a house, creating a scale and everything.
These two girls created a virtual museum about how nurses use math everyday. They interviewed several people and incorporated those interviews into their museum.
My other favorite products were stories students created on a site called StoryBird, where they could make a children's book presenting their research.
Then, since we only had 3.5 days before break, I didn't want to start a new unit. So we reviewed the benchmark they took a few weeks ago and I created a spring relay for a review game. It is just like the frosty relay we do in the winter, but a spring picture instead of a snow man. I didn't think to take pictures until my last class and didn't get any of the finished products, but they had fun!
First, they have to work out the problems. Once they get them correct, they get to add an element to their picture.
Since my classes are so long at this school, I lengthened the amount of problem sets. I made it a little too long so groups didn't have a chance to finish. But, we all had fun and that's what counts...and they did a lot of practice problems!
And now, spring break! aka lots of Netflix on the couch!
