Wisdom Teeth Mayhem

feel free to skip this long, detailed post... ;)

Two years ago my dentist told me I should look into having my last two wisdom teeth removed.
At the time, I didn't have dental insurance.
So, I waited until benefits time rolled around and added it back on.
You have to wait a year for major extractions.
That year hit January 2015.
I went over the summer (July 2014) for my initial consultation.
Yes, I needed them out, but it wasn't urgent.
He told me it would take me longer to heal since I'm so much older than when I got my first two out.
"You're 27 now"
I already knew I had to wait until at least January.
I thought I would get them out over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend to prevent having to take a lot of time off of work.
Poor planning on my part...they were already booked when I called to schedule.
So, I decided on spring break.
I didn't want to be laid up all week I had off (not even realizing at the time we'd be right in the middle of moving...again).
So, I scheduled it for Thursday.
That gave me 4 days to recover before having to go back to school Monday.
Surgery went great!
It hurt really bad when the numbing wore off, but Percocet took care of that real quick!
The hunger part was not fun, but I'm a rule follower and only ate soft foods.
My face swelled up...bad.
Friday night we had some friends in town that we get to see once a year if we're lucky.
Dinner with the crew was not even a question.
We went to The Pit. I ate a few bites of BBQ (because I was SO hungry), but mainly stuck with mac & cheese and mashed potatoes...and maybe a piece of chocolate chess pie.
Saturday was fine. Still a little pain. Still swollen. Still sticking to soft foods diet. Still hungry.
Sunday I looked like a blimp at church, but it was Easter so I went.
Monday was a noticeable turning point.
Less swelling. Less pain!
I began to slowly add regular food back to my diet.
THEN...mayhem!
Monday night I woke up in a lot of pain with a funny taste in my mouth.
I took some pain meds, iced it, and went back to sleep.
Tuesday morning I wake up with blood on my pillow (hints the funky taste I guess).
I freak out and go back to the oral surgeon.
He doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Said sometimes we do weird things in our sleep to cause the bleeding.
As Tuesday progressed, so did the pain. And, I increasingly felt worse throughout the day.
By the time I got home, it was bleeding again.
I laid on the bed and cried for an hour because I felt so bad.
I took Wednesday off and headed back to the doctor.
Infected.
Started antibiotic.
I felt better Thursday, not as great as I thought I would considering I was on Amoxcilin. I remember that stuff working wonders when I was little. Two doses=new human being!
Friday rolls around and my mouth is still draining infection (SUPER gross puss draining into my mouth...insert a whole new level of funky taste).
I go back to the doctor...again.
He decides he needs to open it up and clean it out.
Saturday and Sunday are better in terms of pain and drainage. However, Saturday afternoon I started feeling really bad again.
I laid on the couch all night and all day Sunday with zero energy.
I had an event at church I had to go to Sunday night so I got up to shower.
Then, more fun...Yay...it starts bleeding again (sarcasm)...and draining...a lot.
Monday morning it's draining so bad I can't even sit through a meeting because I needed to spit so much.
I go back to the doctor.
He says the drainage is normal and what they want.
He said I wouldn't see drastic change over night, but hopefully by the time I go back Thursday for my follow up it will have improved.
Monday and Tuesday=constant drainage (some hours worse than others), constant nastiness in my mouth, constant spitting yucky yellowish green crud out.
Tuesday I slept all night with no pain and no drainage on my pillow!
Wednesday, the drainage was better, but not completely gone.
Thursday I went back to the oral surgeon. He was happy to see the drainage was less, but not happy that it was still draining. He flushed it again, gave me another antibiotic and wanted to see me again.
Friday and Saturday was MUCH less drainage, but it moved from draining into my mouth to draining down the back of my throat from my sinuses...aka I just have to suffer through the taste because now it's not something I can spit out.
Sunday and Monday...NO drainage in my mouth! And, the drainage was much less from my sinuses...so much so that I almost forgot about my follow up appointment.
Tuesday I saw the oral surgeon again. He was much happier with how it looked. No puss! And, it looked much less red. He wants to see me one more time next week once I finish the antibiotic just to be sure...

I think...I just might make it...

  1. Holy cow. I noticed you were puffy in pictures, but did not realize it had been this bad! You always have the best/grossest puss stories. ;-)
