We finished our first day of testing on Friday. This year we started with math and because we were short proctors, my class was collapsed on team and I got to administer the test to a small group. Giving a test to 7 kids who don't know each other is so easy! They all sat away from each other and didn't speak a word...they didn't even talk in the 30 minutes we had to wait for the all clear to begin testing. It was great! We finished 20 minutes short of the 4 hour mark. After collecting all test materials, turning them in, and bubbling codes in for the small group, it was time to go back to class! I got no planning, but the day wasn't too bad. I might be getting used to these crazy test days. We didn't eat until close to 1:45, but my students handled it like champs! Letting them play on their phones for the last hour of the day may have helped with that! Overall they did great and I wasn't as exhausted as I usually am and we got to go straight into the weekend!
This is where the exhaustion set in...
Saturday I ran my first 8K. I've been running consistently since running the 5K in October, but didn't start seriously training for this race until I got back from Haiti. I was following a 10K running schedule and struggling through it at the end. I started squeezing in 4 runs a week for the past month and didn't think I was going to be able to get up to my goal. The weather had gotten hot and humid and even waiting until late afternoon, it was still tough to push through the long runs. Then, one day, the weather changed to cooler and there wasn't so much humidity. I ran 5 miles that day like it was nothing! That was about a week before the race. I gained the confidence I needed that day, knowing I could do it. I kept training and still struggled a few days before the race.
I didn't realize when I signed up for this race that the start time was 7:15 am. If you know me, you know I don't like anything early on a Saturday, especially not intense exercise! I also didn't realize it would be the day after our first EOG and the same day as our 8th grade formal that I was helping organize...Once I realized all of that, it was too late to back out.
When I woke up Saturday morning, I really did not want to run and decided I would just go out there and do what I could. I'm proud to say I pushed through! I ran the WHOLE time and finished in under an hour, which were my two goals from the beginning! And, it was even a lot of fun! There were A LOT of people running so I always had people around me and they had people cheering and ringing cow bells all throughout the course. How can you not be excited and keep running with all of that?!?
One of Stephen's roommates from college was in town so he ran it with me along with two girls from my small group. We had a nice breakfast at Elmo's afterward to celebrate the fun!
Then, it was off to Umstead Country Club to set up for the 8th grade formal. We set up for a few hours with the awesome help of a lot of parents. I came home, took a 30 minute power nap, and then got ready for the dance.
We danced the night away and everyone had a blast! We had the place cleaned up by 10 and I was in bed by 11!
This is one of our 8th grade math teachers. He played football at Duke and doesn't have a coordinated bone in his body. The students got a kick out of me teaching him the Wobble!
Then, after church today, I took a 2.5 hour nap! I think I might be ready for our second day of testing tomorrow...
9 school days...I think I can. I think I can. I think I can...
